Launch of Pacific Fairtrade Sub-Network

The Fairtrade Meeting of certified and applicant groups in the Pacific concluded at the end of July in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. Producer groups from Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands, as well as representatives of government organisations and NGOs, came together to learn, collaborate and discuss plans for ways in which Fairtrade certification can contribute to the sustainable development of small producer organisations in the region. This event was organised and sponsored by Fairtrade ANZ as part of their Producer Support project in the Pacific.  Participants were enthusiastic for the opportunity to develop a community of producers in the Pacific, and elected three producer representatives to serve as their voice at the next meeting of the Network of Asian Producers scheduled for January 2012. The elected representatives are Mohammed Habib of Labasa Cane Producers Association (FLO ID 26095) of Fiji, Daniel Kinne of Highland Organic Agriculture Cooperative (FLO ID 2897) of Papua New Guinea, and Isaac Micah of Huiwani Cooperative Society (FLO ID 4436) of Papua New Guinea. The three day meeting resulted in new partnerships and progress in promoting Fairtrade in the Pacific, and has set the stage to further develop the Pacific Fairtrade community and their representation within the wider international Fairtrade system.
